Joule Thomson Effect ( Low Temperature Physics)




" The process in which the gas is allowed to pass from high pressure region to the lower pressure region through the narrow opening, then under adiabatic expansion there is fall in temperature. Such phenomenon is known as Joule Thomson Effect "

Consider a cylinder having non-conducting walls and let a gas at initial pressure (p1, v1)
is enclosed in it two movable piston on its either sides. There is a porous plug ' g ' in the form of cotton which placed adjacent to the piston 'B' as shown in the fig.


Eq.5 shows that in Joule Thomson Effect [ Throttling Process] the Enthalpy of the system remains constant.Now in general form the enthalpy of the system is given by,
